Valeria Zaragoza: Painting Emotion
About the Artist
Valeria Zaragoza is a visual artist, sculptor, and performing artist from Tampico, Mexico, whose work has been displayed across Mexico and the United States since 2006. Her paintings immediately strike the viewer as manifestations of human emotion due their richness of color and chaotic aesthetic.
Artist’s Intention Statement
My work intends to convey through textures and colors the emotional catharsis that I experience when I´m creating. I use everyday objects such as cell phones, clothing, paper and adhesive tapes. I apply acrylic paint and spray, using sponges or brushes to seal the paint. I also use acrylic glue that I guide by emotion to create textures and shadows. This glue is applied with a tool and sometimes even with my bare hands. I use anything, from my fingers to knives, forks, coins or bottle caps to create the intended texture. Actually, I use whatever is within my reach, even if it’s not logical. I really don’t seek to capture something specific other than myself and the situations I face. Recently I suffered from depression and art has made me see the colors and shapes as a new way to smile. My writings have also inspired me a lot. My last exhibition took the name of my poem “Zarpazos, miel y lágrimas” (“Clawing, honey and tears”).
That inspired me to perform each of the pieces, taking as inspiration words or fragments of the poem. I used only automatic painting technique, where my creations have no planning at all. I just let the imagination guide me through, in a spontaneous and intuitive way. And I take objects in my possession to express what I’m feeling in that very moment. I capture them inside the paint, but first I break them, hit them, I sew the fabric with needle and thread—in one way or another I find a method to compress together most of my emotions and threatening thoughts.

|Soy de lila y de turquesa,
de luna, estrellas e impaciencia.
De miel, de melancolía.
De zarpazos y lágrimas de ausencia.
De fuego e inocencia,
destellos de sol y pétalos de rosa,
soy de siempre y de nunca,
de brisa, de tierra y de sombra.
Soy tormenta, soy silencio,
arena, viento y hojas secas,
de vuelo. Soy de nubes.
De lluvia y letras huecas.
|I’m of lilac and turquoise,
Of moon, stars, and impatience.
Of honey, of melancholy,
Of clawing and tears of absence.
Of fire and innocence,
Rays of sun and rose petals,
I’m from always and from never,
Of the breeze, land, and shadow.
I’m a storm, I’m silence,
Sand, wind, and dry leaves,
Taking off. I’m of the clouds,
Of the rain and empty words.
